how to better yourself

Self-improvement is a constant work in progress and making adjustments in your life is never easy. But even small changes can have a tremendous effect on your life and can sometimes mean the difference between a life full of adventure and happiness and one that you walk around hoping that it would change.

Self-improvement can boost your confidence, change your outlook on life and the way you do things which will eventually have a positive effect on your relationships, your health, and more.

Let’s face it, things don’t always turn out the way we planned. As a matter of fact, unexpected things can put sudden twists and detours in your roadmap of life. But that doesn’t mean that you need to accept every situation you find yourself in. Always remember, that you hold the keys to your life so don’t be afraid to use those keys to unlock the greatness that is within you so that you can live the life you deserve.

Now, self-improvement does not have to be a full overhaul of life, nor does it require you to spend a ridiculous amount of money. Just by taking these small actionable steps, I believe you can be on your way to living your best life yet!

1. Learn a new language

One of the most rewarding benefits of learning a new language is connecting with others. Imagine being able to communicate with someone in their native language, what an incredible gift! Being bilingual has a host of other benefits including advancing your career and building lifelong friendships with people you’d never imagine.

2. Learn a new skill

Maybe you’ve always wanted to become a writer, or you’ve been curious about photography but never really thought you’d be good at it. It’s easy to research and get caught in a black hole of 50 opened tabs and a youtube video and never actually get around to doing it. The best way to learn is by doing! Even if you feel totally unprepared, all you need is a little practice. Do you think Lebron James became an NBA superstar overnight? That was years and years of practice to perfect his craft. Keep practicing and as you get better, continue to challenge yourself to learn new skills. You won’t ever regret learning something new.

3. Travel to a new place

Being in a completely new place can either be a soul searching experience or completely terrifying depending on how you look at it. But if you are traveling as a means of personal growth, ensure that you’re doing it for the right reasons. Using travel as a way to escape your current problems will not improve your life since your problems will be waiting for you when get back home. Use traveling as a way to gain perspective, or boost your courage. Either way, you will gain new experiences and make memories that you will remember forever.

4. Start to exercise more often

If you want to give your self-esteem a little boost, starting a regular exercise regime will work wonders for you. Regular exercise lowers your risk of chronic diseases keeps your weight under control and best of all, improves your body image. You know what they say, “when you look good you feel good!”

5. Eat Healthy Meals

Now that you’re working out more often, adding healthy meals will give you the energy you need to push yourself through your workouts. Even if you’re not working out that often, eating a healthy nutritious meal will give you energy to be able to function at your best throughout the day.

6. Practice self-care

Self-care can be as simple as taking a quick walk to clear your head or going to the spa for a day to treat yourself. Developing good self-care habits is essential and should not be taken for granted. Even small things like taking a nap, binge-watching your favorite Netflix show or cooking your favorite meal are good ways to improve your life without thinking too hard about it.

7. Read more

Another great way to better yourself is to read more and read often. Whether you read personal development articles or your favorite romance novel, find something you love that will enrich your life and feed your brain.

8. Get more sleep

According to Mayo Clinic, the average adult needs between 7 to 9 hours of sleep in order to feel their best. However, some people may get 5 hours of sleep and feel fine. But if you’re noticing that you are more irritable and tired very often, it could be because you’re lacking sleep. Plus getting your recommended amount of sleep each night prevents many health issues further down the line.

Have you tried to challenge yourself to maintain any of these techniques? Do you believe these techniques can help improve your life in any way? Why or why not?

I used to be really good at Spanish but haven’t been practice much lately. New languages are fun to learn!

Hello, Samara–

I am in the same course as you on Facebook right now, and that’s how I found your blog. I love your mindset. This is something I will likely share in my own network as it’s advice that I give to others quite often! I’m not so great at taking my own advice, though (how many of us are? “Physician–heal thyself!”). I have been working on Spanish at a snail’s pace for years, and if you dropped me into any Spanish-speaking country I could get around pretty easily. But I recently took up Chinese. :-O I haven’t been as regular at the practice of Chinese, although I’m working on it. Exercise is my achilles heel, and TIME is the lance that sabotages it. I’m working on that as we speak. Thanks for your inspirational blog. 🙂
