how to be successful

One of the questions we ask ourselves every year is how to be successful. But if you’re thinking about how rough 2020 was, you’re not alone. Most of us started last year in the same way we always do – vowing to stick to our goals and being better than the year before. And then the pandemic happened. We’ve lost jobs, our way of life, and worst of all we’ve lost many loved ones.

The pandemic has changed our lives forever. The way we live, communicate, shop, and work has changed for many people. Looking back at 2020, it may be hard to be positive about 2022. It’s left a bitter taste in our mouths and created a mental health crisis as we’ve never seen before.

Still, I want to challenge you to look forward to good things happening in 2022. I want to challenge you to use the experience of the last 10 months to grow in some way. Last year may have knocked us off our feet but this year we can try to make it a little better.

I made a list of 30 things to do to be successful in 2022. These are simple things you can do daily to make your life a little better each day. The challenge is to pick 5 things and commit to doing them consistently for all of 2022.

How To Be Successful in 2022

Stop living above your means

When I say stop living above your means I mean stop spending more than you make. If you’re wondering why your paycheck never goes as far as it should this is probably why. Overspending causes us to buy things that we don’t need. Things that just sit around the house or things that we only use once and never use again so the first suggestion here is to not spend more than you make.

Exercise more

This is a big one. Every year this is one of the biggest New Year’s resolutions. Everyone wants to lose weight. Everyone wants to change their lifestyle but we hardly ever stick to it so to be successful in 2022 we need to start working out more. Even if it is just 10 minutes a day or just taking a walk down the street. Find a way to get active.

Get rid of limiting beliefs

First of all what are limiting beliefs? Limiting beliefs are a form of self-sabotage. It is something that you say to yourself or think to yourself that limits the way you behave or the way you act or just the way you believe. Telling yourself that you will never get out of debt is a limiting belief because you think to yourself that you won’t ever be financially free. If you keep thinking you can’t ever get out of debt, or being in debt is ‘normal’, then guess what? You will never get out of debt. So to be successful in 2022 cut back on the limiting beliefs. Think positive thoughts. Manifest what you’re believing for.

Stop comparing yourself to others

Have you ever heard that famous saying comparison is the thief of joy? Well, it is entirely true. When you focus on other people’s lives or other people’s achievements and not your own it brings you down. Comparing yourself makes you think that you’re not successful or you will never reach that height of achievement. Instead of focusing on what other people are doing, focus on your strengths; focus on the things that you have completed and the things that you are going to succeed at. Just remember that everything that you’re doing or will do is just as important and you’ll be as successful as the people that you’re comparing yourself to.

Eat healthy meals

If you want to feel your best self, then you have to start eating healthy foods. Cut back on the junk food and fast food and try to incorporate more healthy whole foods into your diet. Wondering why you always feel tired and sluggish? It’s probably because of the food you’re eating. Try switching up your daily meals and see how it works for you.

Stop spending too much time on social media

Social media has become one of the most popular ways for everyone to communicate and express themselves. But too much social media can be a bad thing. The average adult spends two hours and 24 minutes a day on social media. So the next time you’re complaining that you don’t have time to work out, or you don’t have time to cook a healthy meal, check how much time you’re spending on social media. Try using that time to do things that you’ve been putting off. An ancient Greek philosopher once said the most valuable thing in life is your time.

Journal more

Putting your thoughts and feelings down on paper does more good than you know. Journaling can help with anxiety, depression, and also with reducing stress. If you’re ever feeling sad or angry or just a little bit down try journaling, try putting your feelings on paper to release the tension. Or maybe try journaling what you’re grateful for. Take five minutes every morning to sit and journal. Write down your thoughts and plans for the day or write down three things you’re grateful for to start your day.

Meditate

Take some time out of your day to sit and be still. Meditation can be a great form of relaxation and also a great way for you to be in tune with yourself. You will need a quiet spot anywhere in your house or in your bedroom or maybe sitting in your car just to be still and relaxed.

Knowledge is wealth and you can gain a lot of knowledge by reading. Reading more can make you smarter, boost intelligence, and can just be plain fun. Many CEOs of huge companies like Apple and Tesla have repeatedly said that they make time every day to read. To stay ahead of the curve you have to keep learning and keep growing and one way to do that is by reading more books.

Track your credit score

If staying on top of your finances in 2022 is one of your goals you will also want to keep track of your credit score. When paying down bills, check to see how it’s improving your credit score and what you can do to boost it even more. You want to maintain a good credit score for when you want to buy a house or a car or to be qualified for a new apartment. Many people underestimate the power of a credit score and try to fix it when it’s too late. A low credit score can keep you from getting good deals and low-interest rates and ultimately cost you more in the long run.

Drink more water

Your body is made up of 60% water so when you’re dehydrated guess what happens? Your body does not function as well as it should. Drinking more water prevents dehydration, keeps the skin looking supple, and energizes the body. Drinking more water can boost your energy levels, help with weight loss, and can also increase performance. If you don’t like the taste of water, try adding some zero-sugar flavor enhancers or try seltzer water. If you have trouble keeping up with your water intake, download a water tracking app or get a water bottle like this one. Keep it nearby as a reminder to drink water more often.

Adopt a better mindset

Mindset is everything. You attract and manifest what you think about. It is a proven fact that people with a good mindset are more successful. Your mindset affects the way you think about things and how you handle and cope with life’s challenges. People with a growth mindset put more effort into everything they do and are more likely to persevere in the face of hardship.

Nurture relationships

One thing that 2020 has shown us is life is short and things can change in an instant. If you’ve been meaning to reach out to an old friend or an estranged family member, don’t wait. Send a short text or give them a quick phone call. If you’re not up for it yet, maybe write a letter of all the things you want to say until you’re ready to reach out.

Make more time for self-care

Self-care is necessary. You cannot be your best self if you do not take care of yourself. Whether it’s taking a long weekend off, going to the spa, reading that book you’ve been putting off, do whatever it takes to make yourself feel great.

Start new hobbies

Starting a new hobby has many benefits you may not have even thought of. It can relieve stress, you can make new friends, improve your skills, or boost your mood. If you enjoy and stick with it long enough, you may find that you can monetize your new hobby to bring in some extra income.

Write down your goals

Goals that are not written down are just wishes. To achieve something really big, you must write it down, make a plan, and actively work towards it. It’s not enough to just think about it. How many great ideas do you think of daily? And at the end of the day how many of them do you remember? If you truly want to achieve a goal, write it down someplace where you’ll see it every single day. The more you see it, the more it’s ingrained into your mind.

Plan your meals

One of the secrets to weight loss is planning your meals. When you take the time to plan your meals, you reduce the chance of eating junk foods or takeout. You also reduce decision fatigue. After a long day of work, figuring out what you want to eat is the last thing you want to do. Planning ahead or even meal prepping will ensure that all your meals are covered. You also save money!

Use a planner

One of the best ways to stay organized and stay on top of things is by using a planner. Planning out your day ensures that you remain productive, and get more done. There are many types of planners, even digital ones but there’s something about writing things down. With digital planners, it’s easy to get distracted by other apps on your phone or tablet.  A physical planner is a great way to plan your day, meals, write down goals, track your habits, or just jot down thoughts throughout the day. My favorite planner to do just that is the Passion Planner

Declutter

Take some time to declutter your closet, your house, or maybe just your workspace. A clean, decluttered workspace is more conducive to better focus and there’s more positive energy with less clutter. Try to do this at least once a week. Keep your workspace clear and you’ll see how productive you will be!

Stop negative self-talk

These may be things that you say to yourself that impacts your mood negatively. Instead of saying “I’ll never get out of debt”, say “I will set a budget and stick to it”. Instead of saying “I will never lose this weight”, say “Losing weight is hard but I will take a 15-minute walk down the street every day”. Always remember YOU are your biggest cheerleader.

Start a side hustle

Multiple streams of income are very important. Whether it’s a part-time job, a dropshipping business, an Etsy shop, or driving Uber or Lyft, do something to bring in some extra income. About 53% of people in the United States live paycheck to paycheck. That also means they are one paycheck away from being bankrupt if the worst were to happen. Having extra income gives you peace of mind and also allows you to be prepared in the event of losing your main income stream.

Wake up early

The way you start your day often determines how the rest of your day goes. Waking up 2 hours before you normally do can be a game-changer. Apart from getting a workout in, you can have a solid hour of interrupted time to get something done.

Make your bed

Making your bed every day requires self-discipline. Taking the time to get it done every day even if you don’t feel like it sets you up to make better decisions throughout the day.

Get more sleep

A well-rested body functions better, improve mental health, and boosts productivity.  Getting adequate rest helps you to focus, and can boost memory. You will also feel way better when you’ve got a good night’s sleep.

Be consistent

The key to success is remaining consistent. Consistent action creates consistent results and self-mastery. If you want to learn a new skill or try something new, work on it a little every day. Serena Williams didn’t become the greatest female tennis player by chance. It took consistent practice and mastering the game to attain that kind of success.

Be intentional with your spending and saving

Set goals and limits to how much you want to save or spend. This does not mean you cannot enjoy your money. Rather, it’s about self-discipline with money and building wealth. Be intentional about how and what you spend your money on. Spend money on things that will help with your success. If you still haven’t figured one of the secrets of how to be successful with money, be intentional with the way you handle your money.

Learn how to invest

One of the best ways to build wealth is by investing. However, you will need to learn more about investing before putting all of your money into the stock market. Always remember the stock market is risky. Never invest money that you cannot afford to lose. If you’re serious about investing do your research to make sure you’re investing your money where you will get higher returns.

Never stop learning

Always be willing to learn and keep learning. Things continue to change and evolve and we should be too. Never stop learning!

Build an emergency fund

Having a fully-funded emergency fund will put you in the position to be prepared in the event of an unfortunate job loss or emergency. For a fully-funded emergency fund, aim for 3-6 months of household expenses or more if you can afford it.

Take care of your mental health

One of the things that many people always neglect or put on the back burner is mental health. Many people can function while suffering depression or anxiety but it is not sustainable. Sooner or later the walls begin to crack. It is imperative to take some time to unwind, see a therapist if you need to, and pay attention to your moods and thoughts. It’s just as important to take care of your mental health as it is to take care care of physical strength.

Have you picked which ones you’ll be committing to this year? Which ones did you choose? Doing all 30? Whoo-hoo! Let me know in the comments!

Loved this post! You provided more than enough ways to be successful in general. I think one of my favorites is stop spending too much time on social media, and not for myself but for many others lol Social media consumes so much of peoples times that they could be using to do more productive things in their own life. This list is a great start for those who don’t know what to do.

Reducing social media time is on the top of my list too. I can’t tell you how many hours a day I lose just mindlessly scrolling lol. Thanks, Shekinah 🙂
